From Sketch to Sample: How a Pajama Design Is Born

Behind GIGIWARM
Detail collage of a cream half-velvet pajama set with short dense matte pile, pink ribbed neckline and cuffs, and teddy bear embroidery

Every GIGIWARM pajama set starts long before it reaches your drawer. It starts as an idea about how a quiet evening should feel: warm enough for winter, light enough to move in, and pretty enough that you do not want to change out of it in the morning. Turning that feeling into a finished set takes patience, and because we make everything in our own factory, we can stay close to every step.

This is how a design goes from sketch to sample — and why so much of the work happens before a single finished set is sewn.

It Starts With an Idea, Not a Trend

A new design usually begins with a simple question: what would make this set feel good to live in? Sometimes the answer is a motif — a strawberry, a teddy bear, a black cat — the kind of small, cute embroidery that makes a plain set feel personal. Sometimes it is a pattern, like Fair Isle or stripes, that gives a classic set a little more character.

From there, we settle on the silhouette. GIGIWARM makes three: the Pajama Set, the Nightgown, and the Cardigan Pajama Set, which comes as a three-piece set. That choice matters more than it looks. A cardigan set layers differently from a pullover set, and a nightgown moves differently from a two-piece set. The sketch has to work for the way the garment will actually be worn at home, not just for how it looks on paper.

You can see the three silhouettes side by side in our Pajama Set vs. Nightgown vs. Cardigan Set guide.

The Fabric Comes First

For us, the fabric is not an afterthought. It is the reason the design exists. Every set is made from our Cloud Knit half-velvet fabric: 100% polyester, made with high-density modified yarn.

Half-velvet is the key detail. It has a short, dense pile that feels plush without the heavy, stuffy feeling of thicker fleece. Compared with coral fleece, it is lighter and less stifling — warm, but easier to wear for a whole evening at home.

The yarn itself is developed for the problems people actually complain about in winter loungewear: pilling, shedding, and static. Our yarn is made to resist pilling, shed less, and carry anti-static yarn woven into the yarn itself, not sprayed on the surface. That last point matters, because a surface treatment can wash away. A yarn-level choice stays part of the fabric.

If you want the full picture, our fabric guide explains what half-velvet is and why we chose it.

From Sample to the Eight In-House Steps

Once the sketch and the fabric are settled, the design moves into sampling and then into production — all in our own factory in Puyuan. We have been making clothing there since 2014, and we do not outsource the work. Every set passes through eight in-house steps: knitting, dyeing and setting, cutting, sewing, finishing, full inspection, batch testing, and packaging.

Keeping those steps under one roof is what lets a sketch survive contact with reality. If a seam does not sit right, or a print or embroidery detail does not read clearly on the real fabric, the team making the sample is in the same factory as the team that will make the finished sets. Problems are caught early, while they are still easy to fix, rather than discovered after hundreds of sets are already made.

That is also why we describe our work as craft-focused rather than fast. A design that looks good in a sketch but pills, sheds, or loses its shape quickly is not a good design, no matter how cute the motif is.

The Check Every Single Piece Passes

Before a set leaves the factory, every single piece is inspected by hand — its appearance, loose threads, size, and any flaws. It is not a spot check of a few pieces from a batch. It is every piece.

On top of that, every batch goes through third-party testing for pilling, colorfastness, formaldehyde, pH, and banned azo dyes. The standard we work to is Class A textile safety, the highest category for textiles that come into direct contact with skin.

We do not claim perfection, and we do not invent numbers we cannot stand behind. What we can say is this: the design is only finished when it has passed the same checks as every other set we ship — the fabric checks, the hand inspection, and the batch tests.

You can read more about the factory behind that process in Inside Our Puyuan Factory.

Why This Slow Start Matters to You

When you buy a set for $158 — currently on promotion from $168 across the store — you are not just paying for a motif or a color. You are paying for the decisions made before the set was ever sewn: the silhouette, the yarn, the in-house steps, and the inspection at the end.

A good example is our Strawberry Crew Neck Half Fleece Pajama Set. The strawberry embroidery is the detail you notice first, but the reason the set holds up is quieter: the half-velvet fabric, the anti-pill yarn, and the checks it passed before it was packed.

That is what “from sketch to sample” really means for us. Not a single drawing, but a whole chain of choices — and the willingness to slow down at the start so the finished set feels right for a long time.

FAQ

How long does it take to develop a new GIGIWARM design?

We do not publish a fixed timeline, because each design is different. What stays the same is the sequence: idea and sketch, fabric choice, sampling, and then the eight in-house production steps, followed by hand inspection and batch testing.

What fabric are GIGIWARM pajamas made from?

All of our sets use Cloud Knit half-velvet fabric made from 100% polyester with high-density modified yarn. It is designed to resist pilling, shed less, and reduce static, with anti-static yarn woven in rather than sprayed on.

Are GIGIWARM sets made in your own factory?

Yes. Our factory in Puyuan has been making clothing since 2014, and all eight production steps — from knitting through packaging — are done in-house, with no outsourcing.

What does Class A textile safety mean?

Class A is the highest safety category for textiles that come into direct contact with skin. Every batch is third-party tested for pilling, colorfastness, formaldehyde, pH, and banned azo dyes.
